GP surgery patients in Leeds are reaping enormous health benefits from The Life Channel's in-practice television network, studies have proven.
An evaluation, commissioned by NHS Leeds in December 2008, showed a rise in understanding of health issues among patients, due to their engagement with the network's key health and well-being messages. This resulted in more patients taking up key services provided by NHS Leeds such as stop smoking services and One Stop Shops - especially in less affluent areas where the services are most needed.
Although over 1,800 GP surgeries nationwide are now broadcasting the rapidly growing network, Leeds currently has the most surgeries with The Life Channel installed in the whole of the UK - a record 82. NHS Leeds has teamed up with the network to communicate directly to patients most affected with vital, national and local public health messaging.
"The Life Channel is a key part of our social marketing approach to raise awareness and initiate change in health behaviour," said Dr J D Fear, BSc MBChB MPH FFPH, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, Head of Healthcare Effectiveness and Equity, Deputy Director of Public Health at NHS Leeds.
