Today sees the lighting of the Olympic Torch. The torch will be lit at a ceremony at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece. The Olympic flame is lit by the power of the sun using a parabolic mirror to focus the sun's rays. The flame is an Olympic that is meant to represent purity as it came from the sun and in Ancient Greece, fire was believe d to be from the Gods.
Once the sun's rays have started the flame, it is carried in an urn to the site of the ancient Olympic Games where it is then used to light the London 2012 Torch.
In the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics, we are showing specially produced, Olympic themed videos on the Life Channel which you can also view using our video portal.
