International Volunteer Day

5 Dec 2011

Today is the United Nation's International Volunteer Day; it is a chance for volunteer organisations across the world to show their contributions towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs were adopted by world leaders in 2000 and are a 15 year plan aimed at tackling extreme poverty.

The 8 Millennium Development Goals are: 1) Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. 2) Achieve universal primary education. 3) Promote gender equality and empower women. 4) Reduce child mortality. 5) Improve maternal health. 6) Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. 7) Ensure environmental sustainability. 8) Develop a global partnership for development.

Whilst we can't all make an impact on every MDG, there are some that we can all work towards, whether at home, at work or in school. The Life Channel is committed to working towards a sustainable environment and schools can now take advantage of Lifechannel Renewables to lower their carbon footprint and also save money on their electricity bills. Furthermore, The Life Channel Video Library contains videos on ways we can all contribute to helping the environment, such as recycling at home and other ways of reducing our individual carbon footprint.

With only three years left of the MDG plan, let's all make a big push towards achieving as many of the goals as possible!
